Heart Health NSW Inc, a non-profit charity based in the Mid North Coast, has launched its fourth walking group in Wauchope. Established 18 months ago, the charity now has 140 members and helps those who have experienced a heart event and their carers.
The other three walking groups are at Port Macquarie, Laurieton and Gladstone. These groups meet weekly for a walk followed by a cuppa and chat. Heart Health has in excess of 100 "Taking their Heart for a Walk" events each week.
Every day, on average, 20 Australians die from a heart attack. The best way to look after your heart is with a healthy lifestyle. Being smoke-free is one of the best things you can do to protect your heart. Manage your blood pressure and your blood cholesterol, manage diabetes, and take regular, moderate physical activity. It's never too late to start.
"The beauty of these walks is that there is no obligation to walk any specific distance or at a particular pace. You walk as far as you want as fast as you feel comfortable with," said Adrian Lee-Archer from Heart Health.
"The Wauchope group has only recently started so we are hoping to build the numbers to challenge the more established groups. These groups were started to help improve the health of anyone with a heart condition, their partners and anyone who enjoys walking, so everyone is welcome.
Would you like to join the group for a walk each Tuesday morning at 8.30 am? They meet outside Waterman's café, Wauchope and enjoy a social cuppa afterwards at the café.
