The Mid North Coast's five-year-old gelding was guaranteed a start in the $350,000 The Stradbroke on June 6 at Eagle Farm with a sensational win at that track on Saturday in a $175,000 race over 1200m.
It was a case of you can't deny a champion galloper his day in the sun after an inglorious start to the Queensland campaign when he finished last after bucking shortly after the start at Doomden on May 9.
Stewards weren't happy with those antics and made him trial to their satisfaction, he racing more genuinely for a 2.5 length sixth in 59.37s behind Starters on May 19.
Port Macquarie trainer Jenny Graham has been sidelined at home due to the Coronavirus border protocols and has left relative instructions to Eagle Farm trainer Barry Lockwood who used to live next door to her when he was training at Port.
A bigger saddle worked wonders with Victorem and the over $1.2million prizemoney earner, ridden brilliantly by Mark Du Plessis, began best before given a trailing position, then finding gaps at the right time, before surging to an easy 1.25 lengths win in 1.10.60, doing the last 600m in 34.25 to start with bookmakers at $17 but paid $18.90 on the TAB.
Part-owner Peter Bannon said he and his wife Rhonda, also a part-owner, along with the other owners and Graham were house-bound to watch the win.
"It was very exciting and a beautiful ride.
"The win has qualified him for The Stradbroke but again we will probably be watching it at home.
"It has shown his real self...he has proved himself a good horse."
He said that the buck jumping episode could have been brought on by Victorem being so "fresh" after not racing for a long period.
"But that race and the barrier trial probably took that freshness out of him and he was on his best behaviour.
"Everyone was happy with his trial...he satisfied all concerned."
Graham's biggest concern is to find another jockey as Du Plessis is booked to ride Outback Barbie.
Ninety-nine nominations have been received for the race but with Victorem qualifying the gelding is expected to receive a favourable weight.
