Radio station 2KM, the Apex Club and the Port Macquarie volunteer firemen, combined last Saturday morning to stage one of the most unusual fundraising stunts ever held on the north coast.
Six volunteer firemen pulled a rickshaw from the main street of Wauchope to the Tourist Information Centre on Horton Street, Port Macquarie, a distance of 14 miles.
In the rickshaw were two of 2KM's radio personalities, Ray Rumble and Nick Erby.
The radio station conducted a first in Australia by "rickshaw mobile" live broadcasting to their Saturday morning listening audience.
They advised of their progress and urged support of the competition being run in conjunction with the "Rickshaw-a-thon".
The competition was held in order to raise funds for the volunteer fire brigade.
The money raised will assist the brigade to provide entertainment for more than 1000 visiting firemen at the forthcoming national firemen's demonstration to be held in Port Macquarie in October.
Funds will also go to benefit the Apex Asthma Pool Fund to have a heated pool installed at the Port Macquarie Hospital.
Members of the fire brigade and Port Macquarie Apex Club moved among the public collecting donations.
New residents commute by boat
The first home on the new Shoreline Estate at North Shore has been completed and the new owners have moved in.
Mr and Mrs John Wallace, formerly of Bondi, bought Lot 2 and have had an attractive beachcomber style cottage erected by local master builder Don Pitkin.
Mr Wallace, who had 30 years in the Royal Australian Navy, does not drive a car and plans to travel to and from the shopping centre and the West Port Bowling Club by boat.
