The Gold Medal Pairs competition has attracted more than 500 entries, half of them from the Sydney metropolitan area.
Honorary organiser of the carnival, Gordon "Banjo" Burgess, said numbers were similar to last year, with some 50 bowling clubs from NSW, Vic, and Qld represented.
Objections to Leagues Club lease
Monday night's meeting of the Port Macquarie Sporting and Leagues Club was told the local government department had raised two objections to the granting of a lease to the club.
The department was concerned the lease, for a section of land at Hibbard, had not been put up for public competition.
Members pointed out that as the club had undertaken to develop the lease area as a sporting complex, incorporating football field, tennis courts, etc., it was unlikely that, if the lease was put up for auction, council would receive any other bid.
Club president, Bill Thomas, considered the matter to be just a formality. He said he had been told 15 acres of land at Hibbard, adjoining the club's proposed lease, had been purchased by council from the Aquatic Club, and this land had not yet been dedicated.
He suggested the delegates take up with the town clerk the possibility of the club buying the 15 acres.
Shire land values trebled
Residents from all parts of the Hastings Shire will meet at Wauchope tomorrow night to discuss new valuations placed on their properties by the Valuer General's Department. Land values on the Hastings Shire were increased up to 500 per cent. It is reported residents are incensed by the steep increase and are determined to fight them.
