The Kendall School of Arts will host a weekend of violin performances and final rounds of the musical competition on Saturday, March 6 and Sunday, March 7.

From 3pm on Saturday, four superb young violinists will compete for an array of prizes in what will be a very exciting afternoon of performances.

The violinists Dominic Azzi, David Carreon, Mark Chen and Tim Yu impressed judges and audiences at the semi-finals in Sydney with their virtuosic flair, stunning technique and their expressive and mature interpretations.

Their programs will feature sonatas as well as dazzling virtuoso feats. Included in their performances will be a short new work, written for the competition, Elizabeth Younan's "Microsonata II".

Elizabeth, who is an internationally emerging composer accepted to study at the legendary Curtis School in the US was unanimously awarded the Watermark composition prize in December last year and her work will be heard in public for the first time ever in this competition.

From 11am on Sunday, three amazing young violinists Hugh Matthews, Grace Wu and Teresa Yan will be performing with the Kendall Festival String Orchestra directed by the director of the competition, Goetz Richter.

They will first feature in performing concerti by Haydn and Bach before continuing to a short performance of a virtuoso work with piano.

Despite obvious challenges, the competition is thrilled to be able to welcome a distinguished panel of judges in Professor Michele Walsh from Brisbane, Professor Roger Benedict from Sydney and internationally renowned German violinist Daniel Roehn who will have the difficult task of determining the prizes.

Prizes include generous cash prizes and in the category A, a violin made from Australian timbers by Michal Prokop. This award is made in memory of Graham Caldersmith OAM.

Following the announcement of prizes the competition finals will conclude with a performance of competition highlights in a grand finale and Celebration Concert at 2.30pm on March 7.

The weekend of performances by the wonderful young violinists is supported by pianists Jeanell Carrigan and Alexander Yau.

The Kendall Festival String Academy Orchestra will also perform under the direction of artistic director Goetz Richter for schools in Kendall and Heron's Creek on March 8, an opportunity generously made possible by the Kendall Community Op Shop.

Members of the public are encouraged to book early as seats are limited due to COVID-19 restrictions.
